Gym with a Purpose.

March 11, 2012

I see some crazy stuff in the gym. Every day. From dudes doing heavy pulldowns behind their necks to women texting on the inner thigh machines, and everyone else conference calling on the elliptical. Seriously. It makes me want to slap these people upside the head!

First of all, if you have spent money on a gym membership, invest a little into learning proper form and function by hiring an actual trainer. Not your buddy the gym rat, but someone who is qualified to show you the ropes. Know why you’re choosing a specific exercise, what it’s for and how it’s done. Plain and simple. I assure you, a few training sessions are cheaper than 6 months of surgery, missed work and physical therapy.

And don’t join the gym just to use the stupid treadmill. That’ll get you nowhere. Literally. Get yourself in the weight room. The only time I EVER saw change in my body was when I began lifting heavy. I might have been the fattest when I was training for a marathon. OMG, and probably the most bored in my life!

If you’re going to spend any amount of time at the gym, go with a purpose. Do you grocery shop without a list? Every workout should be another step towards your goal. Time and intensity matter. If you’re reading on the bike, you’re not working hard enough. If you can do 30 repetitions on a weight machine, it’s not heavy enough. If you’ve spent 2 hours working out, you seriously need to up the intensity.

If I know you and I catch YOU doing bs in the gym, cover your head…’cause I’m comin’ for you.
